Theaster Gates was born in Chicago in 1973. He is an urban planner, sculptor, activist, and Coordinator of Arts programming at the University of Chicago. For the 2010 Whitney Biennial, Gates transformed the Whitney’s Sculpture Court into an installation that functioned as a communal gathering space for performances, social engagement, and contemplation. Gates’ artistic practice includes performance works like If We Breathe, to be performed with the Black Monks of Mississippi at the Rubin Museum of Art on January 22. Gates lives and works in Chicago and is represented by Kavi Gupta Gallery.
