Aaron Johnson
Artists on Art
Friday, October 14, 2011
7:15 PM–8:00 PM Free
In paintings that are glimmering, seductive, and emanating light, Aaron Johnson’s monsters are gruesome, sadistic, and spewing venom. His work is a bold reflection on the decaying excesses of our insatiable culture. Johnson is known for integrating a wide range of art historical precedents, from Italian Renaissance to lowbrow vernacular to art of the Himalayas.
Johnson will join Assistant Curator Beth Citron in conversation about selected works in our Masterworks: Jewels of the Collection exhibition in the Third Floor Gallery.
Aaron Johnson received his MFA from Hunter College, NY in 2005, and lives and worksin Brooklyn. His work has been exhibited internationally at such venues as the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, NY; Gallery Poulsen, Copenhagen; Gallery Brandstrup, Oslo; The Running Horse Contemporary Art Space, Beirut; and Kunsthalle Exnergrasse (Vienna). Johnson’s exhibitions have been reviewed in many publications including Art News, Beautiful Decay, Kunst International, The Art Newspaper, The Village Voice, and The New York Times. His work is in the permanent collections of the Weisman Foundation and the Museum of Modern Art.
Johnson’s current solo show Freedom From Want is on view at Stux Gallery (NY) through October 22.
